Specialist Learning Program for Students with Autism

Specialist Learning Program for students with Autism.

An opportunity for children with Autism in the South West Region.

Cooinda Primary School’s Specialist Learning Program for Students with Autism continues to be the only regional school in WA to offer this unique opportunity at primary level. Families are encouraged to make contact with the school to find out about this unique opportunity.

The program offers a pathway to academic success in the mainstream setting for students who are currently not achieving as a consequence of the challenges associated with Autism.

Eaton Community College hosts a secondary specialist program, providing connected support from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Using evidence-based practices and programs, specially trained staff design learning plans to support students in their academic learning, social communication and adaptive behaviours. They are integrated into Cooinda mainstream classrooms before a fully supported transition back to their local school.

The timeframe varies according to individual student needs.

Student Selection

Cooinda staff will manage the selection process. This will initially be guided by the eligibility criteria followed by a decision around suitability. School capacity at each year level will also contribute to the final outcome.

The eligibility criteria are:

  • A diagnosis of Autism (ASD) without accompanying intellectual disability.
  • Significant social, emotional and/or behavioural issues and challenges directly attributed to the impact of ASD.
  • Independent self-management of personal care requirements.
  • Eligibility for enrolment in Western Australian public schools in Kindergarten – Year 6.

Eligibility alone does not guarantee a place in this program.

Suitability for the program will be determined through a rigorous process that uses information, interview and direct observation processes, and takes into consideration available space within the whole school structure.

The limited places will be offered after a selection process against eligibility and suitability criteria. Students will continue to be selected for the program as vacancies arise.
